Bertram Thomas was a career army officer who, after distinguished service in Iraq and Jordan, was named Finance Minister to the Sultan of Oman. While in this post, he undertook several journeys of exploration into the deep desert.
This map shows the route taken by Thomas from Suwai, just south of Ras al Hadd to Salala in Dhurfar in 1929. The next year, from there Thomas would undertake his crossing of the Great Empty Desert or the Empty Quarter to Doha in Qatar. This would make him the first European to make this epic journey and record it.
