Robert Morden
36 x 43 cm
Morden undertook to illustrate a new edition of the venerable work "Britannia" first published by William Camden in the mid 16th century. Although these maps were updated from those used by Camden himself and engraved by Wiliam Kip and William Hole, they were mostly based on the maps by John Speed first issued in 1611.
Having said that, Morden did adapt them to his own more sparse style with less ornamentation, arguably making them clearer and easier to read. This new style enables us to see one of the major updates, which is the road network now visible in the county.
