Iran (Persia), Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Detailed map marking international borders, both recognized and "hypothetical", as well as railways, roads, and telegraph cables. Published under the supervision of Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India from 1899-1905 and one of the great British statesmen of the late Victorian period.
This large map of Persia reflects Curzon's lifelong fascination with the country and his theory that it would provide an ideal buffer against Russian influence in British India. It was published in the same year as his "Persia and the Persian Question", regarded as the greatest of his travel and political works.
He was given access to the Royal Geographical Society's archives and General Albert Houtum-Schindler, an employee of the Persian government, both of which provided source material not usually available to the general public. This map, compiled by William John Turner, a specialist cartographer in the employ of the R. G. S. is one of the results of Curzon's research.
