Icons are used to delineate camping and picnicking sites, day use only locations, and historical monuments (with and without displays). National Parks and Monuments are also labelled, though not quite as prominently.
The back of the map contains a thorough listing of State Park locations with their acreages, addresses, elevation, and facilities noted. Several panels of text also provide details about the history of the California State Park System, its administration and funding, the size of its holdings, and its future expansion plans.
The map also includes a classic 1950s depiction of Smokey the Bear and a list of rules instructing visitors how not to behave. Overall, a charming piece of mid-century Americana.
