Malaysia. Detailed survey of the Johore Territory and Singapore compiled by H. Lake. Published in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society.
This is believed to be the first scientific survey of the state of Johore. Harry Lake was an engineer and surveyor in the employment of the government of Johore and it is highly likely that the survey was connected with the proposed railway running north of the city of Johore present on the map. The most detailed section of the survey is the southern tip of the province together with the island of Singapore. Due to local environmental conditions, much of the interior is sparse and still unexplored. In his accompanying paper in for the Journal of the R.G.S., Lake explains the difficulties he encountered as he performed his work in the dense jungle.
This is an extremely important map for the geographical history of this region. [SEAS5385]
