Herman Moll
19 x 27 cm
A small map of England and Wales from a pocket county atlas produced in collaboration with Robert Morden. The atlas project was initiated by Robert Morden in 1701 with Herman Moll as the engaver. Morden's large county maps were reduced in size and simplified to produce a pocket edition of his large county atlas.
Upon Morden's death, Moll took over the project, but continued to credit most of the county maps to Morden. The maps of Scotland, England, and Ireland, however, are Moll's own creations. They follow the geographical models later used by Moll for great masterpiece atlas "The World Described", and it is entirely plausible that these small maps were a first draft for those much larger maps.
Bishoprics, universities, and roads are specifically highlighted, with the road network derived from John Ogilby's recently published road atlas of Britain, the first of its kind.
