Herman Moll
19 x 27 cm
A small map of Ireland divided into its provinces and counties from a pocket atlas of the British Isles produced in collaboration with Robert Morden. Archbishoprics, bishoprics, and universities are specially marked.
The atlas project was initiated by Robert Morden in 1701 with Herman Moll as the engraver. Morden's large county maps were reduced in size and simplified to produce a pocket edition of his large county atlas. Upon Morden's death, Moll took over the project, but continued to credit most of the county maps to Morden. The maps of Scotland, England, and Ireland, however, are Moll's own creations. They follow the geographical models later used by Moll for great masterpiece atlas "The World Described", and it is entirely plausible that these small maps were a first draft for those much larger maps.
