The map is oriented with the north showing towards the upper edge of the map but is focused purely on Malta with both Comino and Gozo shown very much as sketches.
Malta at this time was under the authority of the Knights Hospitallers of St. John and under their leadership the island gained importance and strategic leverage, particularly as it was used as a base againts the Ottoman Empire. So much so that in 1565, the Ottomans launched a huge but unsuccessful assult against the island, known as the Great Siege of Malta.
