Strachey was a British army officer in the Bengal Army. From around 1846, Strachey conducted surveys of the Tibetan regions, despite Tibetan authorities restricting British entry to the territory. In 1852, the Royal Geographical Society awarded him the Patron's Medal for his work.
Map details the borders of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, from Hatu Peak and Mount Kailash in the north, south to Dehradun, Uttarakhand to Amroha.
Further points of interest show several river canals including the eastern and western Jumna Canals as well as the Ganges Canal. The area around the city of Ambala on the western part of the map is labelled "protected Sikhs".
