The construction of the railway against local Chinese wishes and the violent suppression of protests by German forces in Shandong Province were two of the leading causes of the Boxer Rebellion, which began in this very region in 1899, the year this map was published.
Coal fields, one of the many resources the Germans hoped to exploit with their new railway, are also marked on the map.
