Aime Humbert
56 x 39 cm
Fine city plan of Tokyo constructed by Swiss diplomat Humbert for his detailed work on Japan during the last days of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
Humbert was elected the President of the Swiss Council of States and led a diplomatic delegation of Japan which succeeded in signing a Trade Agreement in 1864. During his stay in the country, Humbert collected an enviable collection of objects, images and narratives of the last days of the Tokugawa Shogunate. He compiled these into a work in French in 1870 which became one of the major sources and works on the country during this period. It was published in Paris by Hachette.
This plan of Tokyo was included in the work and based on Japanese map compiled in 1862.
