This small geological map focuses on the geology of a section of the Jurassic Coast between Teignmouth in Devon and Weymouth in Dorset. This area was declared a World Heritage Site in 2001 for its role in the early study of fossils, dinosaurs, and the geologic origins of our planet. Seven different geological strata are identified, including chalk, plastic clay, Portland stone, red marl, and sand formations.
This map was included in Rev. William Buckland's Reliquiae Diluvianae, an important early geological work which sought to prove the existence of the Biblical Flood using modern scientific methods. Buckland also wrote the first account of a fossilised dinosaur, which he named Megalosaurus.
