A striking Interwar German satirical map showing a pair of scissors cutting away the eastern sections of a map of Germany. The caption (also translated into English, French, and Italian) states that "You can cut up a map, but not a living body!" This is a commentary on the decision of the Entente Powers to grant large parts of eastern Germany and Prussia to a newly independent Poland after the First World War, despite the large German-speaking populations in these areas.
The illustrator of this piece is Thomas Theodor Heine, a German cartoonist and illustrator who helped to found the satirical magazine Simplicissimus in 1896. His Jewish heritage and anti-Nazi politics made him a target of the Fascist right, and he was forced to flee Germany in 1933.
