A sketch map of Vancouver Island based on surveys by Robert Brown and the Vancouver Island Exploring Expedition of 1863-1866. The expedition successfully charted the southern half of the island, finding small deposits of coal and gold. Brown also collected important records about the Native communities he encountered, recording their myths, legends, and ceremonies in his journals.
