A highly ornate map of Scotland by a leading figure of the Dutch Golden Age of mapmaking. The title is flanked by the Greek gods Hermes and Demeter, representing labour, trade, agriculture, wealth, and fertility. Below the title is the royal coat of arms of William III, held aloft by the English lion and the Scottish unicorn. Though the map is undated, we can surmise from the absence of Queen Mary II's coat of arms that this map was likely produced after her death in 1694.
The back of the map features a "Name-Shewer or Alphabeticall Table Where in are to be shewn all the Cities, principallest Country-Towns, Villages, Castles, Iles, and other most remarkable places in the Kingdome of Scotland". This alphabetical index is designed to help the reader locate every known place in Scotland, from "Abbay" to "Zetyr".
The map itself is in original hand-colour, but we suspect that the cartouches were coloured later. [SCOT1873]
