Sebastian Münster
28 x 34 cm
Sebastian Munster's famous collection of sea monsters and mythical creatures. This is one of the most iconic depictions of monsters and mythical beast available to the collector. This collection of creatures is derived from Olaus Magnus's Carta Marina of 1539 which focuses on the North Atlantic. Some of the more noteworthy creatures are a giant lobster crushing a man in its claw, a double-spouted beast attacking a ship, and a sea serpent wrapping its body around a ship to crush it.
In the upper margin are depictions of strange land animals, including reindeer, a leopard, and snakes. In the bottom left corner is a tree whose fruit hatches live birds which then happily swim away. [WLD4899]
