Violante Vanni
22 x 33 cm
This map was present in the "Gazettiere Americano", an Italian edition of a venerable English work, "The American Gazetteer", first issued in the 1750s. The Italian edition was substantially more illustrated with multiple maps sourced mainly from Jacques Nicholas Bellin but here slightly augmented and engraved by several notable Italian engravers. The work gained immediate popularity as it was issued shortly after the completion of the Seven Years War or French Indian War as it was known in North America.
This specific map of Portobello was sourced from Bellin's map first issued in the "Histoire Generale des Voyages" in the 1750s. [WIND4383]
