Veremondo Rossi
25.4 x 28 cm
Beautiful and detailed map showing the major part of the Paraguay River, which flows through parts of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.
This example was present in the "Gazettiere Americano", an Italian edition of the "American Gazetteer", an English publication of the mid 18th century. The Italian version was compiled and edited by Marco Coltellini who employed several talented Italian engravers to add many maps and illustrations to the work.
The most extensive source for the maps was Jacques Nicholas Bellin, responsible for the cartographic content of the French encyclopaedia, "Histoire Generale des Voyages". This map is very similar that Bellin's map present in that work except that Rossi, the engraver, changed the design of the title cartouche and developed it into a ribbon on the upper part of the map, as opposed to Bellin's more orthodox floral cartouche on the lower right.
