25.4 x 30 cm
A very appealing map of Cuba together with Jamaica, part of the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos.
This fine map was included in the "Gazettiere Americano" and Italian edition and translation of the "American Gazetteer" first issued in the 1750s in London. The Italian edition was compiled and edited by Marco Coltellini and contained many more illustrations and maps. Many of the maps were sourced from the French map makes, Jacques Nicholas Bellin; however, this one is an exception. The cartouche states that the map is "estratta dalle carte del Sig. Poppler". This is a reference to a vast wall map of the English possessions of in the United States and the Caribbean published in 1733 by Henry Popple. This was the first large scale wall map of the United States.
Coltellini has taken the map of Cuba from the wall map and emulated its distinctive style and shape into his "Gazettiere".
