The map focuses on the political borders of the region pre World War I; thus the west coast of Arabia was nominally under Ottoman Empire control although in practice that was Egyptian control, Oman controlled the coast and entrance to the Gulf and Kuwait was a neutral zone. The interior of Arabia was divided into lands such as El Nejd, Jebel Shomar, and Hadramaut and as outside Ottoman control. Two smaller maps showing Cyprus and Egypt represent British interests in the region.
