This map tracks the journeys made by one of the most important 20th century Arabists, Harry St. John Philby. Two of them, in 1917 and 1918 were in south central Arabia, including his first visit to Ibn Saud, who was to become the first King of Saudi Arabia. The third was the longest and the most detailed on this map and shows his travels in the Rub Al Khali, or Empty Quarter. As well as exploring the region, Philby was also aiming to find the Lost City of Ubar, or Irum, or Irem, dubbed the "Atlantis of the Sands" by T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia). Although he never found it, Philby did find the "Wabar Craters", several meteoric impact points situated in Saudi Arabia.
