Edward Stanford
79 x 66 cm
Stanford's Portable Map of India was a popular addition to the firm's inventory and had a long publishing history, with examples being published into the 20th century. They were available as separately issued folding examples as well as normal paper sheets.
This particular example is on two sheets joined and was part of a publication at some stage. It shows the sub-continent in 1874, showing the political status at the time. A small key on the right notes native states, areas governed directly by the British as well as the small enclaves governed by the Portuguese and the French, namely Goa and Pondicherry. It also shows British possessions in Burma after the Second Anglo Burmese War.
