Nicolas & Guillaume Sanson
20.3 x 27.9 cm
Geographically, this map is mostly based on Sanson's larger folio map first issued in his atlas of 1650. However, this version has been updated, particularly in the portrayal of the eastern part of the continent, where the mythical Land of Yedso or Yesso makes a formidable appearance. Much later, this landmass was more accurately depicted as the island of Hokkaido. However, at the time of the printing of the map, Yedso was believed to be part of a possible land bridge between Asia and America.
