This is a slight reduction of Guillaume de L'Isle's map of the same region. It is based on the explorations of French expeditions and fur traders who would travel the length of the Mississippi to the Gulf coast with their wares. At this time, it was the most accurate map of the region although notably, it is pre the nomenclature of New Orleans, which would not be placed on a map until de L'Isle's more focused map of Louisiana published in 1718.
