Petrus Bertius
10 x 13 cm
This is one of the earliest available maps focusing on the Gulf taken from a series of miniature maps compiled by Barent Langenes in 1598. His source was the great map of the Indian Ocean compiled by Hugo van Linschoten c. 1596.
Although there is greater detail on the Persian coast, there are also several recognisable names on the eastern coast of Arabia or Oman, the UAE and Saudi Arabia today. These include Maskat, Soar or modern Sohar and Catura or modern Qatar although as usual, the peninsula is not marked.
Coloured. [MEAST4902]
