A richly detailed map of Australia showing the progress of discovery to 1868 and the route of a proposed trans-Australia expedition by Georg Neumayer which never came to fruition. Dr Neumayer was a German meteorologist and oceanographer who set up the first observatory in Melbourne in 1858. He was a member of the doomed Burke & Wills expedition, but returned to Melbourne before the expedition met its disastrous end. Neumayer attempted to organize a scientific expedition into the interior of Australia in 1868, but failed to gain any traction. This map shows the proposed route from Bowen, Queensland to Perth, Western Australia, along with the locations of supply depots dropped along the way.
A small inset map shows Sydney and Port Jackson in greater detail.
