Frederick De Wit
51 x 58 cm
An uncommon Dutch Golden Age sea chart of the coast of southern Norway from Oslo to Trondheim. Embellished with a magnificent title cartouche representing the industries and traditions of Norway, including hanging fish to dry, mining, chopping timber, goat herding, and even a reindeer-drawn sled. The seated female figure in the foreground is an allegorical representation of the Norwegian nation with an axe in one hand, a ship in the other, and the north star on her head. Rhumb lines and miniature illustrations of sailing ships provide further decoration. Only coastal detail is included on the map.
Original hand-colour. [SCAN2656]
