James Hingston Tuckey
35 x 51 cm
A Chart of the River Zaire, the lower part from the Mouth
to Embomma, corrected from Maxwell's Chart, and from thence to the Narrows at Nomaza
Cove.
This map traces
the journey of James Hingston Tuckey on the River Congo, or ‘River Zaire’ as named
by the Portuguese adaptation of the Kikongo word for ‘river’, ‘nzere’. The map
extends from the River’s mouth to Soondy N’Sanga (present-day Nsundi), and was
based on Tuckey’s sketch and surveyed by Lewis Fitzmaurice.
It features
a large inset of a sketch of the coast from Cape Lopez to the River’s mouth, extending
towards the northeastern trajectory of the river based on “the account received
from the Natives”. In the lower right are two profile sketches of the landscape,
including one to show Ntadi Nzazi (transliterated as Taddy Enzazzi).
