Pierre Duval
11 x 13 cm
A miniature double-hemisphere world map from Duval's pocket atlas, "La Geographie Universelle". California is shown as an island and there is a large, unknown southern continent. Only a vague outline of Australia is visible, based on the discoveries of Abel Tasman in 1644. The geography of the Pacific Northwest of America is also purely speculative, with a large, unexplored landmass extending towards Asia, potentially even connecting the continents.
Published in Pierre Duval's "Geographie Universelle", a pocket atlas composed largely of reduced versions of Nicolas Sanson's maps. Duval was Sanson's nephew and pupil, and he continued publishing Sanson maps long after his uncle's death, usually under his own imprint and with updates and modifications.
