Mercator Hondius
35 x 43 cm
The map's decoration is typical of Mercator's refined style, with a large strapwork cartouche, stipple sea, and swirling lettering. The geography of England and Wales is derived from Christopher Saxton, Scotland is based on Mercator's large map of 1564, and Ireland is a combination of many sources, including Nowell and Hondius.
Latin descriptive text on the verso. Bright original colour. [GB2184]
