Chart of the Dniprovs'ka Gulf and the mouths of the Dnieper and Bug Rivers, published to show one of the primary theatres of war during the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-92. The goal of the war was the Ottoman reconquest of Crimea and the territories surrounding the Black Sea. Russia, in partnership with its new ally, Austria, pushed back the Ottoman advance almost as far as Constantinople itself. The Ottoman Empire was forced to acknowledge Russia's annexation of the Crimean Peninsula, and also ceded Odessa and the surrounding region to Russia. Original hand-colour. [RUS2025] |
