Ambroise Louis Garneray
35 x 46 cm
The Mississippi river at this time is still unbanked and there is an early single deck steamboat similar to the design of the Enterprise, launched in 1814, making its way through the port with sailboats at dock and in passage. Fine original colour aquatint by Sigismond Himely.
Following a career in the French navy, Garneray became the first official painter of the French Navy. In about 1820, Garneray was commissioned to do a series of principal ports including New York and New Orleans.
