Detailed photo-map of the landing site of NASA's Apollo 12 mission in November 1969, signed by mission Commander Charles 'Pete' Conrad (1930-1999) and Lunar Module Pilot, Alan Bean. (1932-2018).
This map of landing site 7 in the Ocean of Storms ["Oceanus Procellarum"] was created to give the crew of Apollo 12 better knowledge of the craters, boulders and lunar terrain underfoot following the landing difficulties during the Apollo 11 moon landing, in which Neil Armstrong had to search for a flat area to land the Lunar Module Eagle on a very limited supply of fuel.
The ellipse shown on this map circles almost every crater and boulder, helping to prepare Conrad and Bean with a high-fidelity map of what they would encounter during the final phases of lunar descent. The data and photographs for the map were provided by the Lunar Orbiter and the map is marked NASA-MSC (Manned Spaceflight Center).
Bean has signed the top left of the map "We landed right on target in the Ocean of Storms / Alan Bean Apollo XII LMP / Nov 1960," and Charles Conrad has signed the top right corner. Framed.
