Spectacular quad-royal pictorial map of London published shortly after the end of WWII by British poster artist Kerry Lee. All of the famous landmarks are illustrated, as are many famous historical figures. The map is surrounded by an illustrated border featuring images of attractions outside of the map's coverage, including Wembley Stadium, Epping Forest, Crystal Palace, and Kew Gardens.
The artist's playful pictorial style stands in stark contrast to the wartime words of Winston Churchill which are printed underneath the map's title in the upper-right, and also to the many buildings which are marked as being blitzed. Published just two years after the end of the war, this map was intended to promote tourism to Britain again and was produced in partnership with the Travel Association of the United Kingdom. Kerry Lee produced a series of maps like this one for the cities of Britain, including Liverpool, Manchester, Oxford, and Cambridge.
Laid down on archival linen. Printed colour. [Tube] [LDN6404]
