World map on Mercator's Projection showing tracing the effects and extent of the great earthquake of Lisbon and the location of the world's volcanoes.
This unusual colourful map focuses on the location of volcanoes as well as the effect of the great earthquake around the city of Lisbon in 1755. It is part of a series of educational cards or illustrations published to great success by James Reynolds.
The map was published at the very dawn of the new discipline of volcanology. The first dedicated volcano observatory was built near Mount Vesuvius in 1841. This map, showing volcanic groupings around the world was published only eleven years later.
Several illustrations add to its appeal, including a large image of the destruction wrought on the city of Lisbon by an earthquake in 1755, the Great Geyser in Iceland and comparative images of volcanoes on the lower border which are identified via a numbered key outside the printed border on the lower edge.
