Engelbart Kaempfer was the son of a minister and studied natural sciences and medicine before entering into the service of the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie or Dutch East India Company), where he was assigned as the physician of the trading post on Dejima from 1690 to 1692. Kaempfer took part in two journeys to the court at Edo. His publications on Japan, which appeared for the most part posthumously, include, notably, A History of Japan, published in 1727. His writings on the natural sciences, regional studies, and history of the area mark the beginning of Western scientific work on Japan, which remained closed to foreigners until the mid nineteenth century.
