SCARCE The City and Southbank: London panorama from the Adelphi, Strand along the Thames from St Paul's Cathedral and the City past Fowler’s Iron Works, College Wharf Saw Mills and the commercial district to Westminster Bridge, Lambeth and beyond. Framed.
Originally published by the London bookseller Samiel Leigh with his sixty foot long Panorama of the Thames from London to Richmond, this smaller view of central London was drawn by the artist John Clark from the top floor of the Adelphi Buildings on the Strand. Clarke’s view shows a relatively undeveloped Thames with the Lord Mayor’s flotilla carefully detailed. Both panoramas were designed to be used by Londoners and tourists alike whilst travelling on the Thames to identify the fine homes, churches and other buildings but were largely novelty items as the constant folding and unfolding made them rather unwieldy.
