Skah-tle-loh-skee
(John Ridge): A member of the Cherokee National Council and one of the
signatories to the Treaty of New Echota of 1835 in which Cherokee Lands east of
the Mississippi were ceded to the United States in exchange for lands in Indian
Territory (Oklahoma). The treaty was not signed by the Cherokee National
Council or its principal chief, John Ross, but nevertheless ratified by the US
Senate giving a legal bases for the forcible removal of the Cherokee known as
the Trail of Tears. Opponents of the treaty had John Ridge assassinated on
June 22, 1839, in revenge for his roles in the land cession.
