Ganundalegi (Major Ridge): Kah-nung-da-tla-geh/Ganundalegi (The man
who walks on the mountain’s top) was a Cherokee chief and signatory of the
controversial Treaty of New Echota in 1835. He received the title of Major in 1814
during the Creek War while fighting alongside General Andrew Jackson. He subsequently
used the title as his first name. Major Ridge was killed in June 1839 in
retaliation of the Cherokee removal.
