The Temple of Flora was one of the finest illustrated botanical works ever produced with some thirty plates produced from 1798 to 1807. Thornton put every penny into the venture which ended in financial disaster. In an attempt to clear his debts, Thornton organised a lottery with twenty-thousand tickets at two guineas each with numerous ‘prizes’ including a smaller edition of the entire Temple of Flora.
