Part of the War of the Sixth Coalition, this battle was part of Napoleon's attempt to re-impose his dominance in Central Europe. Although the Allies gained an initial advantage, Napoleon managed to turn the tide. Although technically a French victory, both sides suffered heavy losses, which the French could ill afford after Napoleon's disastrous Russian Campaign of 1812.
