Beautiful example of Rossi's map of the historical region of Capitanata now northern Pulia in southern Italy.
Rossi states his source on the cartouche. Antonio Magini published the first regional atlas of Italy. He began the project in 1594 and it was published posthumously in 1620 by his son. The work was immediately adopted as the major source for maps of Italy both by native and international map makers such as the Blaeu family.
Arguably this map is larger, clearer and easier to read than the source map. It is superbly engraved and is a particularly strong impression of the plate. It is also adorned by an elaborate cartouche on the lower left together with a dedication to Baron Carlo Alberto Guidobono Cavalchini.
