Daniel Stoopendaal
30 x 48 cm
This map is based on a 1663 map by Nicolas Visscher, published for inclusion in Dutch Bibles. This example is also a Bible map. It was engraved by D. Stoopendaal and published in the early 18th century by the Keur family, one of the leading Bible publishing houses of Amsterdam.
The most prominent geographical inaccuracy is the depiction of California as an island. Australia and New Zealand are both incomplete, following Abel Tasman's mapping of 1644. The south polar region is entirely empty - the unknown southern landmass which often appears on Dutch Golden Age maps has been left off this map.
Coloured. Dutch text on reverse. [Shirley 498] [WLD4941]
