Sagano Hikotaro
51 x 110 cm
This very finely engraved map of Japan has its sources from earlier more traditional maps of the country issued in the Tokugawa period. However, it has been influenced by newly introduced western traditions, particularly in the introduction of multiple insets, the major of which depicts Hokkaido in the lower right. Additional insets show the major rivers and mountains of Japan, the Kurile Islands and a series of vignettes of the principal ports of Japan. A small schematic of Tokyo is also present in the lower centre of the map. A bright ornate title is present on the upper left.
Original colour. [SEAS5529]
