Samuel Augustus Mitchell
27 x 21 cm
This work was extremely popular and first issued in 1839. It was reprinted several times into the 1860s. Although the date on the map did not change, the geography was amended.
This example has a fairly narrow date window: Texas is shown as part of the Union but Upper California is shown as separate from the United States. The former changed status from a separate republic to a U.S. state in 1845 while the outcome of the Mexican American War changed the status of Upper California to a U. S. state in 1848.
