A delightful vintage Quad Royal map of Somerset, published by British Railways to promote tourist travel. Designed by poster artist William Bowyer and first published c.1948 as one of a series of posters to lure tourists to the southwest of England.
The map is richly decorated with caricatures of historical and mythical figures illustrating the history and attractions of Somerset. These include vignettes of Cheddar Gorge, Bristol and Bath, and the 'Seven miles of golden sands' at Weston-super-Mare, as well as cartoons of Alfred the Great, John Bull, and St Dunstan. The coats of arms of Glastonbury, Bath, Bridgwater, Taunton, Wells, and Weston-super-Mare are included in the bottom-left corner of the map.
