Another easily overlooked detail is the marking of the short-lived north/south division of New Mexico and Arizona. New Mexico territory was a free territory, whilst Arizona Territory declared allegiance to the Confederate cause as a slaveholding territory in 1861. It was quickly occupied by Union forces from California in 1862 and remained under Union control until the end of the war.
