Blackie & Son
36 x 51 cm
Despite the recent advances in the exploration of Africa by individuals such as Livingstone, Stanley and Speke, this map is a graphic example of how little was known of the interior even relatively late into the 19th century. Vast areas of land are shown as blank while several tribal names are positioned within the map, but with little conviction. In many ways, this map still harks back to the "scientific" maps of the early 18th century.
