Late 19th century Victorian map of Madagascar showing the latest reports and discoveries provided by several important missionaries.
As with many maps from Stanford's London Atlas, this map is fundamentally based on the outline provided by John Arrowsmith who collaborated professionally with Stanford in his later years. Ultimately, Stanford purchased Arrowsmith's map plates in 1873. He then renamed the "London Atlas" from Arrowsmith's to Stanford's and continued to augment it and revise it into the 20th century.
The map of Madagascar is based on Arrowsmith but has been substantially updated from maps produced by the Royal Geographical Society which integrated reports from several important missionaries active on the island. Of particular note were the Reverend William Deans Cowan, Joseph Mullens and Joseph Sewell, all of whom contributed to the cartographic revelations of the island.
