From 1870 onward, a visit to the Plain of Troy was almost mandatory for European travellers to the Ottoman Empire. Excavations of the supposed site of the ancient city had begun in 1871 by Calvert and Schliemann on the site of Hissarlik or "The Hill of Fortresses". Several sensational discoveries, including the hoard which became known as "Priam's Treasure", led to a renewed interest in Troy an increased tourist traffic dramatically.
